Somehow Thrice’s new album leaked online this week, almost three months before the intended release date! What a fiasco, the band has decided to change the digital release date of “Beggars” to August 11, while the hard copy will still come out in October. Honestly I feel bad for my favorite band, but I just couldn’t resist, I had to download it. Beggars is great, of course, Thrice is just a great band, no matter what kind of music they are playing. They continue to evolve with the new release, letting go of some of their intensity and becoming much more groove based, think post hardcore Radiohead. Much different then the shredding machines that they were a few years ago. Well two thumbs up from me.

free agency
Well the NHL free agency period has cooled off considerably. Once again millions of dollars were thrown around like nothing and players were overpaid in an effort to make ones team better. I thought the Canucks have done a solid job of getting the twins resigned at a reasonable rate and grabbing Mikael Samuelsson out of Detroit, also at a fair price. They now have 20 players signed with just over five million left in cap space. And if they can ink Luongo to an extension they could possibly trade prospect Cory Schneider for someone. Yes, I know, its July. I must be starving for material. One more thing, I just wanted to mention this cool website called nhlnumbers.com which is really helpful for seeing how each team has distributed their money both now and for the future, as well as how much cap space they have left.
stand-up
I have never really understood stand up comedy, I just haven’t found it funny. What I mean is that while I love Seinfeld the television show, I don’t really like Jerry’s stand-up routine. Of course one option there could be that Jerry suffers with out Larry David’s input, but I have always thought it was the stand-up medium that didn’t do it for me. I think I’m changing my mind.
I was flipping channels last weekend when I came across a Russell Peters special called “Red, White and Brown.” Russell is a Canadian comedian who’s main shtick is making fun of racial stereotypes. And I mean no holds barred. I found myself laughing out loud, but not too loud, lest I wake the rest of the fam.
I have often said that jokes aren’t funny unless there is a little truth to them, other wise there’s no bite. Now while some (OK a lot) of Russells humor was quite juvenile, there was some truth to what he was saying. It has made me stop and think about racism and how we define who we are.
Louis C. K. is also a very funny guy, kudos to Sean at work who loves this guy. Here’s a clip from Conan O’Brian’s show. Funny and makes you think about how spoiled we are.
more summer fun
We have a new baby in the house… I bought my first bicycle in maybe twenty years, a Rocky Mountain Solo LE. It’s a road bike, which may not be as cool as a mountain bike, but is better for what I’ll be using it for, and I still think it’s pretty slick. I’ve discovered that riding is a lot of fun and less impact then running, so it’s good when my joints or tendons are sore from soccer or running. I feel fast on my bike and enjoy traveling further distances and exploring, things I can’t do running. We’ll see how much of a commitment I make to riding, right now I’ve got some big ideas. For starters Gibson and I went for a fun ride around the hood yesterday, it was fun, the first of many to come.

I tried another new sport today, disc golf. We went to Langley’s Passive park, it was also a lot of fun and it was totally free. My friend Edwin provided the discs and there are no green fees, people telling you to hurry up, or to replace your divets. I found a beginner set of three discs on Amazon that just might find their way to my house soon, maybe I can bike to Passive park to play a round.

vacation
News and notes from our camping trip at and around Fintry Provincial Park:
My parents borrowed a 5th wheel camper, my first time using one, very nice.
Liz and I ran up a set of over four hundred stairs a couple times and then the next day hiked up it again, this time I had Ellie in a back pack. My quads and calves are killing me.
The weather didn’t cooperate with us much so one day we went into Kelowna and spent a few hours at the coolest place, H2O Adventure and Fitness Center. It had water slides, an Olympic length pool, spray park, river run and wave pool. I really should of waited out the lineup for the flowrider, boogey boarding indoors! Very cool. We all had a blast, if we are ever in the area again, I think we’ll make another visit.
Liz and I saw the new John Dillinger movie Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. I thought it was surprisingly mediocre, considering the cast and the subject. I also realized that I’m totally used to the “big time,” Colossus or Silver City experience, the Kelowna theater just didn’t cut it for me.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Seriously, the classic Jane Austin novel infused with zombie attacks and mayhem. Liz stumbled upon it at Chapters, too funny.
white tiger
My latest read was the winner of the Man Booker Prize last year, White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. The story centers around Balram Halwai a driver/servant from a small town in India, working for the upper class, who than nefariously overcomes his position in the social caste to become a self made man in the city. Don’t shake your head at me, I didn’t spoil the story for you, all this is evident after the first chapter. After watching and thoroughly enjoying Slumdog Millionaire, I thought it would be fun to read a novel set in India, albeit a more cynical version. White Tiger gave me a bit of a feel for the changing economy and culture of India, but after reading negative reviews I am left wondering how accurate they are. Some have accused Adiga of catering to a white audience and, if the Man Booker Prize is an indication, he has succeeded in that. The accuracy question aside, I enjoyed this dark, sarcastic, irreverent book. I found Balram to be intriguing and charming. There was enough to keep me interested, his outlook on life captured my attention as well as the duality of morals, but his actions kept me from rooting for him.
