does 5 seconds make a difference?

Who takes the five second rule seriously?  The rule states that once you drop some food you have five seconds to pick it up and eat it, any longer and it will be too contaminated, now you’ll have to throw it out.  Although I don’t strictly follow the rule, I will pick up food after I drop it, that it is if it’s something dry like a chip or maybe a granola bar.

It seems that some people have actually tested the idea out.  Most famously Mythbusters, found that there was no significant difference in the number of bacteria collected from 2 seconds exposure as there was from 6 seconds exposure. The moisture, surface geometry and the location the food item was dropped on did, however, affect the number of bacteria.

Well, I don’t mind taking my chances with a little bacteria.  My research into hangovers taught me that  your stomach actually produces hydrochloric acid, take that bacteria!  Of course you could get sick from using the floor as a plate, especially in the kitchen, the most bacteria infested room in the house, but we’re much more likely to get sick from something like undercooked meat or a Canucks loss.

hangovers

Stuff you should know had an interesting podcast on hangovers recently, here’s some cool stuff I learned:

-Alcohol is a diuretic, making you release up to 4 times liquids that you drink.

-Of course, this makes you dehydrated.  Your organs begin to take water from the brain causing it to shrink, thus pulling on the membranes that attach it to your skull.  That’s a formula for a nasty headache.

-You also lose many electrolytes, potassium, salt, magnesium and other minerals which affects how your cells and muscles function.

-The darker the booze (love that word), the more impure it is, which makes for a worse hangover.  This means that vodka, gin, light rum and white wine are better for you than red wine or bourbon.

-The carbonation in beer or pop speeds up the stomachs absorption of alcohol, so your body has a harder time dealing with the toxins.

-Coffee will reduce the swelling in your blood vessels and help your headache, but in the end will only dehydrate you more.

-Fatty foods before drinking are good.  The grease will coat the stomach, giving it more time to digest the alcohol.  In the Mediterranean some people will drink olive oil before drinking for the same result.

-Bananas, eggs, fruit juice and sports drinks are good the day after, the have the electrolytes and potassium etc. that you have lost and will restore the imbalance.

f-bomb

My parents like to tell a story once and a while about me.  Once when I was a little boy I ran into the kitchen sliding with my socks on the lino and said, “Boy Mom, that was one hell of a ride!”  My parents then had to explain that hell was not a good word and that I shouldn’t say it anymore.

My son is so much like me… but this time he clearly “one-upped” me.

Most of Liz’s family were sitting around chatting after Thanksgiving dinner the other weekend when Gibson came in the room.  He sat on his Mom’s lap and started looking through the Playmobile catalog that was sitting there.  He then announced something like, “Wow, that one’s a cute littler f*cker,” pointing at the picture of one of the models.

Now where would my son learn a word like that?  I’m happy to say that it wasn’t from me, well not directly.  Gibson told us that sometimes when he is in bed he listens to whatever TV program we’re watching, which lately happens to be Curb Your Enthusiasm, an HBO program with no limits to the content.  Whoops!

We’ve decided to watch TV a little quieter since.

inglouriously alone

I rarely find time to go see a movie in the theater these days, it just doesn’t seem to fit in my schedule.  On Monday night I snuck out to go and see The Inglorious Basterds… by myself.  Oh the shame, to go to the movies by oneself, I was heckled with chants of wierdo, nerd and loser.  OK, no I wasn’t.  I don’t mind going to movies alone, it’s not like you really are carrying a conversation with your date or friend anyway.  This way I get to see the movie I want without sharing my treats or tissues during the tear jerking part of the show.

The actual movie was pretty good.  It was a solid Tarantino flick, bloody action and lots of dialogue.  It’s a sort of alternate history of World War 2.  The ad campaign was trumpeting the movies as a Brad Pitt film and he was good in it, but I felt that the show was primarily a showcase for Christopher Waltz, an Austrian actor playing the part of “The Jew Hunter.”  He was amazing, extremely charming, yet frightening and creepy.

boys adrift

I completed my first audio book at work this week, Boys Adrift by Dr. Leonard Sax.  Boys Adrift is a book which gives reasons as to why boys seem to be struggling in North American schools these days.  Beyond that Dr. Sax sees that many of these boys grow up to be lazy and unmotivated, living at home with their parents and not really having a problem with it.

Now while I didn’t stay with my parents for long after graduation, I can identify with some of the doctors other observations in regards to motivation in school.  I would do just enough homework and studying to pass and be allowed to go on the next basketball trip.  One point that I think may have helped me is to help boys make a connection between what their learning in class and the real world.  One example I always think of for myself is my lack of success in high school french, “What is the point?” I thought, yet when I actually lived in South America for a total of over a year I learned a second language fairly quickly.  Maybe western Canadian kids should all make a trip to Quebec as teenagers to instill some applicability into their studies.

Sax argues that the yesterdays grade one curriculum is today’s kindergarten and that boys are not mature enough to sit, be still and learn at that age.  It’s not a question of intelligence, but of maturity.  I was interested to find out that Finnish students don’t begin school until the age of seven and that Finnish teens consistently rank among the top students in the world.  Talking to a friend who spent some years in Scandinavia, revealed that Finland has free full time day care from 0 to 7 years old, maybe Canada should take a look at that?

Other reasons for unmotivated boys are video games, environmental estrogens from plastic bottles and food sources, the overuse of prescription drugs for ADHD and the devaluation of masculinity by pop culture.

ted

A friend has been telling me about this website called TED for a while now, TED stands for technology, entertainment, design.  TED holds a conference each year featuring talks by some of the worlds smartest, most innovative and inspirational people, these are known as TED talks.  Past speakers have included former U.S.A. prez Bill Clinton, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, musical artist Imogen Heap, one of my favorite authors Malcolm Gladwell, atheist champion Richard Dawkins and evangelist Billy Graham.  TED is a non-profit organization and so lectures are freely available on the website or for download on iTunes and the few I’ve watched have been great.

Each year the conference awards three TED prizes, given to a leader in his/her chosen field of work, with an unconventional viewpoint and a vision to transform the world.  Bono from U2 and Dave Eggers (who wrote What Is The What) are two men who I admire who have won the $100 000 prize in the past.  I also found 2008 winner Karen Armstrong’s speech thought provoking, here it is:

Mewsic

The music scene has been good to me lately with a lot of my favorite bands coming out with new albums this summer.  After a while though I was starting to wonder when I would “discover” my next big thing.  I kind of feel like an old geezer when I’m not uncovering new bands once and a while, I need to keep it fresh.

A few weeks ago I was messing around on Dredg’s website and found a forum on “your favorite albums.”  This band called Mew popped up a few times so I decided to check it out and was pleasantly surprised.  Mew is like a combination of No Knife and Sunny Day Real Estate with keyboards, ummmm yummy.  I’ve listened to three of their albums, the newest one is only a few months old.  I don’t consistently like every song, some of them are a little boring, but on the whole they are really interesting, the depth of the guitar chords can be brilliant.

Although they don’t get any play here in North America, it turns out Mew is pretty big in their homeland of Denmark as well as other parts of Europe… those crazy Euros.
