I have a confession to make… I like a little romance. I mean as much as a beer drinking, sports playing, macho guy (sarcasm) like me is able to. I love my wife, I buy her flowers and I get a kick out of the odd/good rom-com. Some how we (admit it you do too) enjoy watching two fictitious people fall in love, which is kind of weird when you think about it, but true non the less.
Well, if your in the mood for a little vicarious romantic thrill, let me recommend to you 500 Days of Summer. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick, Third Rock) and Zooey Deschanel (Yes Man, The Assassination of Jesse James) and was directed by Marc Webb, who had mostly only directed music videos previously.
First off all my indie music loving hipster friends will enjoy the sound track, which includes The Smiths, Feist, The Pixies and my new discovery Regina Spektor. The director Webb clearly loves music, as it plays a prominent roll in the movie with scenes of karaoke, Belle and Sebastian quotes and an in movie music video that is quite humorous.
Beyond the attention to music and some solid acting, the story of 500 Days of Summer really shone for me. As I would lean to advocating one character’s side of the story, I would have to rethink things from the others point of view and see things in a different light. What does that mean? It means this aint no simpltons rom-com, the movie and it’s romantic couple have layers.
In the end it’s as the tag line says, “This is not a love story. This is a story about love.”
*** Even if you’ve already seen the movie, you may not have seen this little extra diddy I found. ***
